Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium — Telehealth (North Slope)

The North Slope Borough encompasses Utqiaġvik (Barrow), the northernmost city in the United States, along with villages such as Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, and Wainwright. The Arctic Slope Native Association (ASNA) provides primary health services. Comprehensive autism evaluations require flying to Anchorage (~500 miles south). ANTHC telehealth connects North Slope families with Anchorage specialists. This is one of the most remote diagnostic access situations in the country.

Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow) has no road connection to Alaska's highway system. All specialist care requires flying to Anchorage. ANTHC telehealth is the primary pathway for ongoing specialist consultations.

Alaska's Part C EI program serves children birth to 3 in the North Slope Borough. Given the Arctic setting and extreme remoteness, services rely almost entirely on telehealth family coaching with very limited in-person visits. FREE for eligible children.

Arctic Slope Native Association — Behavioral Health

The Arctic Slope Native Association (ASNA) provides behavioral health services for the North Slope Borough, including Utqiaġvik and surrounding Arctic communities. ASNA's services include mental health support for children with developmental disabilities and co-occurring anxiety or behavioral needs. Culturally grounded in Iñupiaq values and practices.

The North Slope Borough School District serves students across Utqiaġvik and eight remote Arctic villages. Special education services under IDEA — including school-based speech, OT, and behavioral support — are often the most accessible and consistent developmental services available to children with autism on the North Slope. School-based services are particularly critical given the extreme geographic isolation.

In one of the most remote school districts in the United States, PARENTS, Inc. offers the only accessible independent advocacy resource for families navigating the North Slope Borough School District.
