Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) — Developmental Services

YKHC is the primary healthcare provider for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region, serving more than 50 rural communities across Southwest Alaska. YKHC's Bethel headquarters provides developmental pediatrics and autism-related evaluation to Alaska Native and all community members in one of the most remote and medically underserved regions of the United States. Telehealth is essential throughout the region.

Bethel is accessible only by air. YKHC is a tribally operated health system — the primary health resource for YK Delta communities. Many villages have Community Health Aides (CHAs) who can help initiate referrals.

Free services for children under 3 under IDEA Part C.

Bethel

Infant Learning Program — Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta

The ILP serving the Bethel region provides Part C Early Intervention to children birth to 3 across the vast Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Given that most communities are fly-in only, services combine in-person visits with telehealth and family coaching. This program is the most critical early-childhood developmental resource in Bush Alaska.

FREE. Many YK Delta communities can only be reached by small plane or snowmobile. ILP staff travel to villages when possible; telehealth parent coaching supplements in-person visits.

Applied Behavior Analysis therapy — typically requires insurance authorization.

Bethel

ABA Telehealth — Bush Alaska Parent Training

In-person ABA therapy is not available in Bethel or the YK Delta. Anchorage-based BCBAs may provide telehealth parent training and behavior consultation to families in the region. Alaska Medicaid (Denali KidCare) covers ABA telehealth services. PARENTS, Inc. and YKHC can help coordinate referrals.

Ages 2–18

No in-person ABA in the YK Delta. Telehealth parent training is the primary behavioral support model for most Bush Alaska families.

YKHC Behavioral Health — Bethel

YKHC Behavioral Health provides mental health and substance use services to the YK Delta region, including support for children with developmental disabilities and co-occurring mental health needs. Culturally grounded services that incorporate Yup'ik values and practices alongside evidence-based approaches.

Lower Kuskokwim School District — Special Education

The Lower Kuskokwim School District serves more than 4,000 students across 27 schools in remote YK Delta villages. Special education services under IDEA are provided in each school, often representing the only structured therapeutic support available to children with autism in these communities. Village-based teachers often serve as paraprofessionals and support staff.

School-based IDEA services are often the primary (and sometimes only) structured support for autistic children in YK Delta villages. PARENTS, Inc. serves all LKSD families.

PARENTS, Inc. — Statewide PTI (Interior Region)

Alaska's federally funded Parent Training and Information Center serves families statewide including Fairbanks North Star Borough. Provides free IEP support, special education advocacy, and training. PARENTS, Inc. is often the most important first call for Fairbanks families navigating the school system.
