Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) — Developmental Services

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) is the tribally operated health system serving the Kusilvak Census Area (formerly Wade Hampton), including Emmonak, Mountain Village, St. Mary's, and more than 20 villages in the Yukon Delta region. YKHC coordinates developmental screenings and autism-related referrals; comprehensive evaluations require flying to Anchorage. Telehealth is the primary ongoing care model for this fly-in-only region.

Kusilvak (formerly Wade Hampton) is part of the YK Delta region. All communities are fly-in only with no road access. Bethel is the regional hub ~60–100 miles east of many villages. YKHC coordinates with Anchorage specialists via telehealth.

Alaska Early Intervention — Infant Learning Program (Kusilvak)

Alaska's Part C EI program serves children birth to 3 in the Kusilvak Census Area, including families in Emmonak, Mountain Village, St. Mary's, Pilot Station, and surrounding Yukon Delta villages. Telehealth family coaching and periodic in-person visits (when travel is feasible) are the service delivery model. FREE for eligible children.

FREE under IDEA Part C. YKHC's Bethel hub coordinates EI services for YK Delta villages. Contact the statewide ILP or YKHC for local coordinator information.

Applied Behavior Analysis therapy — typically requires insurance authorization.

Emmonak

ABA Telehealth — YKHC-Referred Anchorage BCBAs (Kusilvak)

No in-person ABA therapy is available in the Kusilvak Census Area. Anchorage-based BCBAs providing telehealth parent training are the primary ABA resource. YKHC behavioral health staff in Bethel can help coordinate referrals to telehealth ABA providers. Alaska Medicaid covers ABA telehealth.

Ages 2–18

Telehealth parent training is the only realistic ABA option. Internet connectivity varies by village — satellite internet has improved access. YKHC can help coordinate.

Mountain Village

Lower Yukon School District — Special Education

The Lower Yukon School District serves more than 1,600 students across Emmonak, Mountain Village, St. Mary's, Pilot Station, and surrounding Yukon Delta communities. Special education services under IDEA — often the only structured therapeutic support available to children with autism in these villages — are provided at each school site.

School-based IDEA services are frequently the primary support for autistic children in Kusilvak villages. PARENTS, Inc. serves all LYSD families statewide.

PARENTS, Inc. — Alaska PTI (Statewide)

PARENTS, Inc. provides free IEP advocacy and special education support to Kusilvak Census Area families by phone and telehealth. In one of the most geographically isolated regions of the country, PARENTS, Inc. is often the only independent expert resource for special education navigation.
