Chugach Census Area encompasses remote Southcentral Alaska communities including Valdez and Cordova. Families requiring autism evaluations travel to Anchorage. PARENTS Inc. (AK PTI) provides free statewide advocacy, and Alaska's HCBS waiver and Infant Learning Program provide coverage for eligible residents.

Valdez

Valdez Medical Center — Pediatric Referrals

Valdez Medical Center serves the Chugach Census Area's largest community at the terminus of the Alaska Pipeline on Prince William Sound. Developmental screening can be initiated locally; comprehensive autism evaluations require travel to Anchorage (~5 hours by road via Richardson Highway, or ~45 min by air). Telehealth with Anchorage specialists is the most practical follow-up.

Valdez is road-connected to Anchorage (~5 hrs via Richardson Hwy) and has daily flights. Cordova, the other major Chugach community, is accessible only by air or ferry — Cordova families face additional travel barriers.

Free services for children under 3 under IDEA Part C.

Valdez

Alaska Early Intervention — Infant Learning Program (Chugach)

Alaska's Part C EI program serves children birth to 3 in the Chugach Census Area. Valdez families may have more consistent in-person EI access; Cordova and remote communities rely more on telehealth. FREE for eligible children.

ABA therapy

Applied Behavior Analysis therapy — typically requires insurance authorization.

Valdez

ABA Telehealth — Anchorage BCBAs (Serving Chugach Census Area)

In-person ABA therapy is not available in the Chugach Census Area. Telehealth ABA parent training from Anchorage-based BCBAs is the primary behavioral support option. Valdez families have road access to Anchorage; Cordova families must fly. Alaska Medicaid covers ABA telehealth.

Telehealth is the primary ABA option. Valdez families can drive to Anchorage for in-person services (~5 hrs). Cordova families require a flight.

Autism Society of Alaska — Statewide Support

Chugach Census Area families (Valdez, Cordova) can connect with the Autism Society of Alaska for statewide resources and online parent communities. Valdez families have road access to Anchorage-area events.

Valdez families can access Anchorage events via road. Online communities serve both Valdez and Cordova.

PARENTS, Inc. — Alaska PTI (Statewide)

PARENTS, Inc. provides free IEP advocacy to Chugach Census Area families. Valdez and Cordova school families benefit from PARENTS, Inc.'s independent expertise — both communities have small school districts where independent advocacy is especially valuable.

FREE statewide PTI. Phone and telehealth support available for Valdez and Cordova families.
