Illinois overview

Illinois uses the PUNS (Prioritization for Urgency of Need for Services) waitlist — register with your local Community Mental Health Board as early as possible, since PUNS placement determines access to the Medicaid DD waiver. Illinois DHS Division of Developmental Disabilities administers services. The state's Family Support Program and Home-Based Support Services offer some pre-waiver supports. Illinois Medicaid uses managed care organizations statewide, with Cook County residents having the additional option of CountyCare. ABA therapy is covered for children under 21. Illinois has a robust autism insurance mandate for commercial plans, and Medicaid follows EPSDT requirements. Prior authorization is required by all plans.
